Quick answer
A traditional Borneo tattoo is tapped into the skin by hand. The artist holds a needle stick (kayu tatok) and strikes it with a second stick (pemalu) while a helper stretches the skin. Kuching is the centre of the tradition, with studios such as Borneo Headhunters and Skrang Tattoo. Pick a motif with an Iban or Dayak artist, and avoid status marks that you have not earned.
A Borneo tattoo is more than a style. For the Iban, Kayan, Kenyah and other peoples of Sarawak and Sabah, tattoos once recorded journeys, rank and protection. Today, a revival led by Bornean artists has made hand-tapped work available to anyone who books with care. This guide covers the practical side: the process, the feel, the healing, where to go and how to choose a design. For the meaning of each motif, read our guide to Malaysian and Iban tattoo designs.
What Borneo hand-tapping is
In Iban, a tattoo is called pantang, pantak or kelingai. The hand-tap method uses two tools. First, the needle stick, known as kayu tatok or kayok tatok, carries the needle at its tip. Next, the striker, called the pemalu or pengetuk, taps the needle stick to drive ink into the skin. Researchers also describe a step called nujah, when the artist taps ink into the outlined design.
According to Sarawak Tourism, three people take part: one taps, one stretches the skin, and one receives the tattoo. It also says the technique is essentially the same across the tribes of Sarawak. In the past, tips were made of sharpened bamboo or animal bone, and the ink, called alung, came from cooking-pot soot mixed with sugar-cane juice or honey.
Today, reputable artists use sterile needles and commercial tattoo ink instead. Always ask about this before your session, because hygiene matters just as much with hand tools as with a machine.

How a hand-tapped Borneo tattoo feels and heals
People describe the feel in different ways. For example, Ambrose Ong, a hand-tapper from Miri who works in KL, told DayakDaily that the method is gentler on the skin than a machine. Similarly, a visitor told SAYS in 2025 that "the machine was way more painful than the hand-tapping method." These are personal accounts, not medical findings, and pain still depends on placement. Our tattoo pain chart shows which areas hurt most.
The rhythm is the big difference. Instead of a constant buzz, you feel a steady tap, tap, tap, with short pauses as the artist re-inks. Many clients find it easier to relax into that rhythm.
Healing follows the same basic rules as any tattoo. Keep it clean, moisturise lightly, avoid soaking and stay out of the sun until it heals. In Sarawak's heat, sweat and river trips make this harder, so plan your session near the start of a quiet few days. Our guide to healing a tattoo in Malaysian humidity has tips for hot, wet weather.
How long a hand-tap session takes
We found no standard session time published by the main studios. In practice, hand-tapping is usually slower than machine work, because every dot of ink comes from a single tap. Size, the density of black fill and the artist's pace all change the time. A bunga terung, traditionally about 13 cm across on each shoulder, is a solid, filled design, so expect a longer sitting than a simple outline. Ask your artist for an estimate when you book.
Also, book ahead. Master tappers often travel for conventions and guest spots, so a walk-in on your last day in Kuching may not work.
Where to get a hand tap tattoo in Borneo
The tradition is strongest in Kuching. Each studio below has two or more independent sources and showed activity in 2025 or 2026. See our Kuching tattoo shop guide for the full city list.
Borneo Headhunters Tattoo & Piercing Studio
Ernesto Kalum founded the studio in 1998 and helped lead the modern revival, including organising the first International Borneo Tattoo Convention in 2002. He studied with elderly practitioners in remote longhouses. In 2017 he tattooed actor Henry Golding with bunga terung. The studio sits in old Chinatown, a short walk from the Kuching Waterfront.
Skrang Tattoo & Piercing Studio
Boi Skrang is known for tattooing Anthony Bourdain with a bunga terung at a longhouse in the Skrang area. A 2025 visitor described a back room kept only for hand-tapping. He was also vice-president of the Kuching Tattoo Art Association at the 2025 expo.
Beyond central Kuching
In Kota Samarahan, Nicholas Jenta Anchu of Inkzation Tattoo, president of the Kuching Tattoo Art Association, offers a traditional bamboo-needle option. Over in Kota Kinabalu, Orangutan Tattoo Studio offers hand-tapping and hand-poking alongside machine work. In and around KL, Electric Dreams Tattoo Collective in Petaling Jaya, plus Borneo Ink and Borneo Utara Tattoo Studio in the city, all work with Bornean artists.
Bamboo tattooing is not the same thing
On Langkawi, Nan Tattoo in Pantai Cenang describes itself as a traditional bamboo tattoo studio. That is a different hand method. Bamboo tattooing is better known from Thailand, where the artist works with a single long rod, while a Bornean tattoo uses two sticks and a tapping rhythm. Both can be beautiful, but if you want an Iban piece, book with a Bornean practitioner.
Festivals where you can see hand-tapping
Conventions are a good way to meet artists in person. The 2025 Kuching International Tattoo Expo had 10 traditional hand-tapping booths. Next, the Sarawak International Tattoo and Cultural Festival 2026 runs on 23 to 25 October at Kuching Community Hall. After that, the Miri Tattoo Festival 2026 runs on 6 to 8 November. Check our tattoo expo calendar for updates.
Choosing an Iban tattoo motif with meaning
Many Bornean motifs were earned, not chosen. So pick a design with the artist, not from a screenshot. Here is a short guide based on published sources:
- Bunga terung (eggplant flower): an eight-petal rosette on the shoulders, marking a young man's passage into adulthood and his journey, or bejalai. It is the motif most often given to visitors.
- Ketam (crab): strength, courage and protection, worn on the arm or the back of the shoulders.
- Kenyalang (rhinoceros hornbill): rank, prestige and protection.
- Tegulun (back of the hand or finger joints): the headhunter's mark. Do not request it unless you are Iban and the artist agrees it is right for you.
- Ukir rekung (throat): traditionally for men of honoured status. Again, avoid it as a visitor.
Our Malaysian tattoo designs guide explains these and other motifs, including Kayan and Kenyah women's designs, in more depth.
Respect and etiquette for a Borneo tattoo
- Go to a Bornean practitionerBook with an Iban, Dayak or Orang Ulu artist, or one trained in the tradition, ideally in Sarawak.
- Learn the meaningBorneo Ink's Eddie David has said such tattoos "must mean something", because you carry the history on you.
- Let the artist guide youIf the artist says a motif or placement is not right for you, accept it.
- Avoid earned status marksSkip tegulun, ukir rekung and other marks of rank unless the tradition gives you the right to them.
- Ask about hygieneCheck for sterile single-use needles and commercial ink, just as you would at any studio.
The good news is that many artists welcome outside interest. Nicholas Jenta told Bernama it is "even better if outsiders are interested in our tattoos". Likewise, Simon David of Electric Dreams said, "We want to share and preserve the culture."
How much a hand-tapped Borneo tattoo costs
We found no published price list from the main Kuching hand-tap studios. The only figure we found came from the 2022 Kuching Tattoo Festival, where organisers quoted a minimum of RM150 per design. That is a festival figure and is now several years old. Expect master artists to charge more than an average studio, and expect large filled pieces to cost more than small outlines. Ask for a quote before booking, and see our tattoo price guide for general Malaysian ranges.
Aftercare for a hand-tapped tattoo
Follow your artist's instructions first. In general, wash gently twice a day with mild, unscented soap, apply a thin layer of aftercare cream, and keep the area out of the sun. Also avoid rivers, the sea and pools until it heals, which matters on a Sarawak trip. Our full tattoo aftercare guide covers each stage. If you plan to give blood later, note that the 3-month wait applies to hand-tapped work too; see our blood donation guide.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Borneo tattoo?
It is a tattoo in the traditions of Borneo's indigenous peoples, such as the Iban, Kayan and Kenyah. Traditional pieces are hand-tapped with two sticks and use motifs tied to protection, rank and life journeys.
Does hand-tapping hurt more than a machine?
Not always. Several clients and artists say it feels gentler than a machine, but these are personal accounts. Pain depends mainly on placement and your own tolerance.
Can non-Iban people get an Iban tattoo?
Many Iban artists welcome respectful outsiders. Learn the meaning, book with a Bornean practitioner, and avoid status motifs such as tegulun or ukir rekung.
Where can I get a hand-tapped tattoo in Kuching?
Borneo Headhunters on Wayang Street and Skrang Tattoo on China Street are the best-known studios. Both sit in old Chinatown near the Kuching Waterfront. Book ahead, as artists often travel.
What does bunga terung mean?
Bunga terung, the eggplant flower, traditionally marks a young Iban man's passage into adulthood and readiness to journey. Its centre spiral stands for the line of life.
How much does a Borneo hand-tap tattoo cost?
The main studios do not publish prices. A 2022 Kuching festival quoted a minimum of RM150 per design. Master artists and larger pieces cost more, so ask for a quote.
