Melaka has a small tattoo scene and a thin online footprint. We list only the studios we could check, and we show you how to vet the rest yourself.

Quick answer

We could verify two studios in Melaka: Eden Place Tattoo on Jonker Street and Bushido Arts & Bodywork in Taman Melaka Raya. Other shops exist, but we could not confirm they are active. For a tattoo shop in Melaka, message on WhatsApp first, avoid Friday to Sunday evenings near Jonker Walk, and look at KL or Seremban for bigger projects.

If you search for a tattoo shop in Melaka, you will find a handful of Facebook pages, a few map pins and almost no reviews in English. That makes the city harder to judge than Penang or Kuala Lumpur. So rather than pad out a "top ten", this guide is honest about what we could check. We list the studios that passed our tests, explain the local scene, and point you to good options nearby when Melaka does not have the artist you need.

How we checked Melaka studios

Our rule is simple. A studio needs at least two independent sources, such as its own Instagram plus a directory or map listing, and signs of work in 2025 or 2026. In Melaka, most shops fail the second test, because they post mainly on Facebook and TikTok and rarely date their work in ways we can read. As a result, only two of the tattoo shops in Melaka we looked at made the list. No studio paid to appear. Our editorial policy explains the full method.

Verified tattoo shops in Melaka

Eden Place Tattoo (Cat Soul Tattoo)

Area
Jalan Hang Jebat (Jonker Street), Chinatown
Known for
All styles; also pico laser removal
Price tier
Mid (estimate)
Getting there
About 5 minutes on foot across the river from Dutch Square

Eden Place sits right on Jonker Street, so it is the studio most visitors find first. Its lead artist, @pipesun, has 14 years of experience, according to the studio's Instagram bio. The bio also describes the studio as LGBT-friendly. No unit number is published, so ask for directions on WhatsApp or Instagram before you go.

Bushido Arts & Bodywork Tattoo Studio

Area
Jalan Melaka Raya 11, Taman Melaka Raya
Known for
Custom work by artist Leo Lazaroo
Price tier
Mid (estimate)
Getting there
Short Grab ride south of the Stadthuys; shoplot parking nearby

Bushido works out of the Melaka Raya commercial grid, away from the tourist crowds. It posted new work regularly from October 2025 through August 2026. Because the studio lists only a phone number, call or message first to confirm the address and book a consultation. Then ask to see healed photos in the style you want.

Studios we could not confirm

Several other names appear in directories. For example, Dragon Tattoo Studio is listed at Dataran Pahlawan Megamall, and Yaksha Body Deco has pages near Plaza Mahkota and in Kampung Lapan. However, we found conflicting addresses or no dated recent work, so we cannot vouch for them yet. If you visit one, apply the checks below and judge for yourself.

Melaka's tattoo scene in brief

Every tattoo shop in Melaka we found falls into one of two groups. First, there is the heritage and tourist core around Jonker Walk, Plaza Mahkota and Dataran Pahlawan. These shops see walk-in visitors, including Singaporeans on weekends. Second, there are suburban shoplot studios in Melaka Raya, Kota Syahbandar, Kota Laksamana and Ayer Keroh. These typically serve local, often Chinese-speaking, clients by appointment through WhatsApp, WeChat or Facebook.

That said, the city punches above its size for events. The 6th Malacca Tattoo Convention ran in October 2024 at Swiss Garden Hotel. Then, in July 2026, the Malaysia Tattoo Art Festival took over Terminal Pahlawan. Our Malaysia tattoo expo guide tracks upcoming dates, and a convention is a good chance to meet artists from across the country.

Jonker Walk, crowds and the heat

Plan around the night market

Jalan Hang Jebat closes to traffic on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings for the Jonker Walk night market, which runs until about midnight, according to GoMelaka. So do not ask a Grab to drop you on Jonker Street on those nights. Instead, get off at Dutch Square or on Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, then walk. A weekday afternoon session is usually calmer for you and the artist.

Walk the heritage zone before, not after

Melaka's old town is flat and walkable, but the midday heat is fierce and shade is patchy. Do your sightseeing in the morning, then go to your session. After a fresh tattoo, sweat, sunscreen and crowds all irritate the skin. Also, keep the wrap on until you reach your hotel. Our tattoo aftercare guide explains how to heal in Malaysian humidity.

Parking and transport

Parking in the heritage core is limited and paid. For Melaka Raya, Kota Syahbandar or Ayer Keroh, Grab is easiest, and those shoplots have their own parking. Ayer Keroh sits about 15 km from the centre, near the expressway exit.

What a tattoo costs in Melaka

We found no verified price list from any tattoo shop in Melaka. Social media shows promotional offers, but some of those are for cosmetic brow work rather than tattoos. In our estimate, suburban shops sit at or below national small-tattoo rates, while heritage-core studios charge mid-range prices. Size, detail, placement and the artist's experience set the final figure. For real ranges, see our tattoo price guide, and always confirm the quote before booking.

How to vet a tattoo shop in Melaka yourself

  1. Check recent, dated workLook for posts from the last few months, ideally with healed photos rather than fresh ones.
  2. Ask who will tattoo youThen look at that artist's own portfolio, not just the shop's page.
  3. Watch the setupNeedles should come from sealed packs, and the station should have barrier film and fresh gloves.
  4. Get the quote and deposit terms in writingA WhatsApp message is enough, as long as it states the price and what happens if you cancel.

Nearby options if Melaka is not enough

For a large realism piece, a Japanese sleeve or a specialist fine line artist, it is worth travelling. Seremban's tattoo shops are the closest alternative up the North–South Expressway. Beyond that, Kuala Lumpur's studios offer the widest choice of styles in the country. Heading south instead? Our Johor Bahru tattoo guide covers JB.
