Quick answer
The small tattoo price in Malaysia is usually RM150–RM350 for a 2–3 inch design. Anything smaller, such as a 1-inch symbol or initial, normally costs the shop minimum of about RM120–RM250. Fine line work follows the same ranges, since we found no published fine line surcharge. Detail, artist seniority and the city change the final figure, so confirm before booking.
Small tattoos are the most popular first tattoos in Malaysia, and they cause the most price surprises. People expect a 2cm heart to cost a fraction of a palm-sized piece. In reality, the small tattoo price in Malaysia barely shrinks below a certain size. This guide explains why, using minimums that studios have published, and shows how to stretch your budget. For the wider picture, see our main tattoo price guide for Malaysia.
Small tattoo price in Malaysia at a glance
| Size | Typical range (RM) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1 inch | RM120–RM250 | Almost always the shop minimum |
| About 2 inches | RM150–RM250 | Dragonfly about RM150; Gimmick minimalist RM250 |
| 2–3 inches | RM150–RM350 | Borneo Ink RM250–RM350 within 3 inches |
| 3–4 inches | RM350–RM450+ | Starting to price by detail, not just size |
Most of these figures come from studio prices that Daily Vanity published in August 2023. Others come from studio FAQs we checked in October 2026. Since rates tend to rise, treat them as floors rather than ceilings.
Why minimum charges dominate small tattoo pricing
Every tattoo needs the same setup. The artist opens new needle cartridges, fills fresh ink caps, wraps the machine and station in barrier film, prints a stencil and cleans everything afterwards. That cost barely changes whether you get a dot or a rose. As a result, nearly every studio sets a minimum charge.
Published minimums in Malaysia fall into two broad bands:
- Budget and JB studios: about RM120–RM150. For example, QiiQii Tattoo in Taman Gaya advertised minimalist florals from RM120, and Peace Tattoo in Mount Austin from RM150.
- Established Klang Valley studios: about RM200–RM250. Black Cat Tattoo Studio in Sunway lists a RM200 shop minimum, while Wayang Kulit Tatu and Mao Tattoo quoted about RM250.
So, a 1-inch tattoo almost always costs the minimum. In fact, the small tattoo price in Malaysia often stays flat from about 1 inch up to 2 inches. Your design only starts to cost more once it takes longer than the time the minimum covers.
Ask the studio how long its minimum covers. If the answer is "up to an hour" or similar, a slightly bigger or more detailed design may cost you nothing extra.
Multiple small tattoos in one session
Getting two or three small pieces at once is one of the best ways to beat the minimum. However, studios count them in different ways, so ask before you book.
- Per piece: some studios charge each design separately. Three small tattoos could then cost about RM450–RM1,050.
- By time: other artists price the whole sitting by hours. Since the setup happens once, this often works out cheaper.
- Matching sets: friends or couples getting the same small design may find the studio prices the second one lower. Check our couple tattoo ideas for inspiration.
Also think about placement. Two pieces on the same forearm need one setup. In contrast, a wrist piece and an ankle piece may need the artist to reposition you, re-wrap and restart, which takes longer.

Flash days and set-price designs
Flash means designs the artist has already drawn. Because the drawing time is done, flash often costs less than a custom piece of the same size. Several Malaysian studios sell flash. For instance, The Tattoo Parlor Malaysia in Kelana Jaya runs flash days, where artists offer a sheet of ready designs on a set day.
Flash days usually work on a first-come basis, so follow the studio's Instagram for dates. Prices vary widely, though. Yang Lee Tattoo in SS2, for example, sells larger online flash designs at RM888–RM1,688 each, which sits well above small-tattoo pricing. In short, flash is cheaper than custom work of the same size, but not always cheap.
Promotions are another route. Dragonfly Tattoo ran an August 2026 offer of a free minimalist tattoo with a minimum spend. Deals like this come and go, so check the studio's current posts rather than relying on old screenshots.
Fine line tattoo prices
Fine line tattoo prices in Malaysia usually match the small-tattoo ranges above. Gimmick Tattoo in Cheras, for example, listed minimalist 2-inch work at RM250. In Kuching, fine line specialist Space Studio publishes RM400–RM2,500+ depending on the design, with a design called "Stars in Bloom" at RM500.
We found no Malaysian studio that publishes a fixed fine line surcharge. Even so, fine line can cost more in practice for two reasons. First, the work is slow and precise, because a shaky single-needle line shows instantly. Second, popular fine line artists often have long waitlists and can set their own rates. As a result, the artist matters more than the style label.
Will a tiny fine line tattoo last?
Very small, very fine designs can blur as ink spreads under the skin over the years. Tiny lettering is the usual worry. A good artist may suggest going a little bigger or spacing letters wider, and that advice is worth taking even if the price goes up slightly. Our article on how fine line tattoos age explains what to expect, and the fine line style guide covers the look itself.
What changes a small tattoo price in Malaysia
Two designs of the same size can carry very different quotes. Here is what pushes the price up or down:
- Detail: a single outline is quick, while micro-realism or tiny portraits take far longer.
- Colour: colour needs more passes to pack in, so it adds time.
- Placement: fingers, ribs and the inner wrist take more care than a forearm.
- Seniority: The Tattoo Parlor, for example, listed junior artists from RM250 and senior artists from RM350.
- City: JB shops often start lower than KL studios. Compare options in our Malaysia tattoo shop guide.
Be careful with very cheap small tattoos
Social media sometimes shows small-tattoo promotions far below the usual minimum. In Melaka, for example, search results showed offers "from RM49", although we could not confirm what they included or whether they were cosmetic tattoos. A low price is not automatically a bad sign. Still, the setup costs are real, so ask how the studio can offer it.
Before you sit down, check that the artist opens new needles in front of you and that the station is wrapped. Also look for healed photos in the portfolio, not just fresh ones. Our guide on how to choose a tattoo artist has a full checklist.
