Quick answer
A tattoo cover up in Malaysia means tattooing a new, usually larger and darker design over an old one so the old lines disappear. Most faded or small tattoos can be covered in one plan. Dark, dense or very large ones often need a few laser fading sessions first. Expect to pay the new tattoo's price plus any cover-up fee, such as Borneo Ink's published RM300.
Cover-ups are one of the most common reasons people walk back into a studio. Some want to hide an ex's name. Others have a blurry tattoo from a cheap walk-in shop or a design that no longer fits their life. This guide to getting a tattoo cover up in Malaysia explains how the process works, what limits the new design and how to decide between covering, reworking and removing. Prices come from studio policies we checked in October 2026.
How a cover-up tattoo works
Tattoo ink is not like paint. It sits in the skin, and lighter ink does not fully hide darker ink underneath. So a cover-up works by camouflage rather than by painting over. The artist designs a new piece whose darkest areas, heaviest shading and busiest textures fall right on top of the old lines. Meanwhile, the lighter parts of the new design sit on clear skin.
Because of that, the artist builds the design around the old tattoo, not the other way round. They will usually trace or photograph your existing piece, then sketch options that hide it. Natural shapes with lots of texture, such as flowers, feathers, animals, clouds and Japanese backgrounds, work well. Clean geometric shapes and fine lettering are much harder to use.
Which tattoos can be covered?
Most tattoos can take a cover-up in some way, and artists in Malaysia see every kind. Still, some are much easier than others. Here is a rough guide:
- Easier: small, faded or thin-line tattoos, older pieces that have softened, and light colours.
- Harder: solid black areas, thick tribal bands, heavy lettering and very fresh tattoos that are still dark.
- Hardest: large dark pieces in awkward spots such as the hands, neck or fingers, where the cover-up cannot grow much bigger.
Scarring also matters. If the old tattoo left raised or patchy skin, ink may take unevenly. A good artist will point this out at the consultation. Dragonfly Tattoo in Mid Valley, for example, lists scar cover-ups among its specialities, so experience with damaged skin is worth asking about.
Wait until the old tattoo has fully healed before any cover-up. If it is new, give it at least a couple of months. The top layer of skin usually heals by about two months, according to Cleveland Clinic.
Design limits of a cover-up tattoo
Go into any tattoo cover-up in Malaysia with an open mind. The old tattoo sets the rules, so you cannot have just any design. Expect these limits:
- Bigger: the new piece usually has to be larger than the old one.
- Darker: deep shading, black or rich colours do the hiding work. Pale pastels and soft watercolour rarely cover anything.
- Busier: texture and detail break up the old outline, while open skin shows it through.
- Placement-bound: the new design has to sit where the old one is, which limits its shape and direction.
If those limits feel too tight, laser fading can give the artist far more freedom. Read our guide to tattoo styles to see which looks suit dense coverage.
Fading with laser before a cover-up
You do not need full removal to get a better cover-up. A few laser sessions can lighten an old tattoo enough for the artist to design almost anything over it. In fact, some Malaysian studios suggest this route. Tattoo Things in Johor Bahru, for example, notes that partial laser fading may come first for some cover-ups.
Laser removal for full clearance usually takes many sessions spaced weeks apart. DermNet says most tattoos need 5 to 12 treatments at 6 to 8 week intervals. Fading for a cover-up typically needs only part of that course, although your clinic and artist should agree on the target together.
In Malaysia, laser tattoo removal is a medical procedure, so choose a doctor-led, licensed clinic. In January 2025, the Ministry of Health said it had charged beauty-centre owners for offering laser and other medical aesthetic procedures without qualification. Our guides cover laser tattoo removal in Malaysia, removal prices and clinics in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor Bahru.
How much does a tattoo cover up in Malaysia cost?
Cover-ups usually cost more than a fresh tattoo of the same size, for two reasons. First, the design takes longer to draw, since it has to hide something. Second, the new piece is usually bigger. Some studios also add a set fee.
| Cost item | Typical figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Cover-up or rework fee | RM300 on top of the tattoo price | Borneo Ink FAQ, for work from other studios |
| New tattoo, palm-sized | RM350–RM750 | Published studio rates, 2023–2026 |
| New tattoo, half sleeve | RM800–RM6,000+ | Published studio rates, 2023–2026 |
| Laser fading, per session | About RM200–RM2,500 by size | Published Malaysian clinic prices |
The Borneo Ink FAQ is the clearest published example we found of a cover-up fee. Other studios may simply build the extra time into the quote. Either way, ask for the full tattoo cover-up price in writing, as fees vary across Malaysia. For general size and style ranges, see our tattoo price guide for Malaysia.

The blackout tattoo option
A blackout tattoo fills an area with solid black ink. Some people use it to bury a tattoo that no other design could hide. Others pair it with negative-space patterns, where bare skin forms the design inside the black. It is the most reliable way to cover a large dark piece.
However, think hard before you choose it. Blackout is close to final. It is very hard to cover again, and laser removal gets harder as the amount of ink grows. The Kirby-Desai scale, which clinics use to predict removal sessions, scores heavier ink as more difficult. Blackout also takes long sessions, and solid packing can be sore. Check our tattoo pain chart before you commit.
Rework vs cover-up
Sometimes you do not need to hide a tattoo at all. A rework keeps the original design but improves it. The artist might sharpen blurry lines, add shading, refresh faded colour or extend the piece so it looks intentional.
Choose a rework if
- You still like the idea or subject
- The problem is fading, thin lines or patchy colour
- You want to keep the size about the same
Choose a cover-up if
- You want a different design or meaning
- The old piece has a name or image you want gone
- You are happy for the area to grow
For older tattoos that are simply fading, a touch-up may be enough. Our guide to tattoo touch-ups in Malaysia explains the difference.
Choosing an artist for a cover-up
A tattoo cover-up is a specialist skill, and not every artist in Malaysia takes them on, so pick carefully. Ask to see healed cover-ups, not just fresh ones, because a cover-up can look perfect on day one and let the old lines show through months later. Also look for before-and-after photos. Several Malaysian studios list cover-ups among their services, including Borneo Ink in Mont Kiara and Ink & Needles in George Town, which offers them after a consultation.

Frequently asked questions
How do you cover up an old tattoo with a new design?
An artist designs a new, usually bigger and darker piece whose heaviest areas sit on top of the old lines. If the old tattoo is very dark, a few laser fading sessions first give more design freedom.
Can tattoos be completely covered up?
Most can, but not with any design you like. Dark, dense tattoos limit the options unless you fade them first or choose blackout.
What is the best thing to cover up a tattoo?
Designs with dark shading and lots of texture, such as florals, animals and Japanese backgrounds. Light watercolour and fine lettering hide very little.
How much does a tattoo cover up in Malaysia cost?
The price of the new tattoo, plus any cover-up fee. Borneo Ink publishes RM300 on top of the tattoo price. Add laser fading if your artist recommends it.
Is a blackout tattoo a good idea?
It hides almost anything, but it is very hard to cover or remove later. Treat it as permanent.
