Quick answer

The best tattoo shop in Penang depends on what you want. For realism and big projects, look at Ink & Needles, Pitt's or Skin Nation. Fine line fans should try Miuzzy Ink or THRIL LAB. For easy walk-ins near the Komtar bus hub, Exotic and Lostchild are the simplest. Most open around noon and close at 8pm or 9pm, so book on WhatsApp first.

Finding a good tattoo shop in Penang is easier than in most Malaysian cities, because the island packs a lot of studios into a small area. Almost all of them sit in George Town, within a 20-minute walk of Chulia Street and Love Lane. That said, the quality and the booking style vary a lot. Some shops welcome backpackers off the street. Others only take booked clients and plan pieces weeks ahead. This guide lists nine studios we checked against at least two independent sources, plus the local know-how you need for timing, transport and healing.

How we picked these Penang studios

Choosing a tattoo shop in Penang from a map alone is risky, so we did the checking first. Every studio below appears in at least two independent sources, such as its own website or Instagram plus a directory, a press roundup or a map listing. We also looked for signs of work in 2025 or 2026. Where that evidence is thin, we say so. No studio paid to appear, and the order is geographic, not a ranking. Price tiers are our own estimates unless we name a published figure. For the full method, read our editorial policy.

Where tattoo studios cluster in George Town

Penang's scene splits into two neat clusters on the island, plus a separate local scene on the mainland.

First, there is the Komtar and Prangin Mall strip along Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong. These are long-running shops, often inside malls, with piercing counters and walk-in trade. Because Komtar is the Rapid Penang bus hub, this is the easiest area to reach without a car.

Second, there is the Penang Road and Lebuh Keng Kwee edge of the heritage zone. These studios sit a short walk from the hostels and cafés of Chulia Street, Love Lane and Armenian Street. As a result, they see plenty of travellers, so weekend slots go fast.

Meanwhile, a few appointment-only studios sit just outside the core, on Bridge Street and Jalan Hutton. Across the channel, Bukit Mertajam has its own mostly local scene, where shops typically serve Penangites rather than tourists.

Many George Town studios work out of upper floors of old shophouses, so look for a side door or staircase.

9 verified tattoo shops in Penang

Pitt's Tattoo and Piercing

Area
174 Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong, George Town
Known for
Black and grey, realism, surrealism, Japanese, lettering
Price tier
Mid–Premium (estimate)
Getting there
About 5 minutes on foot from the Komtar bus hub

Founder Pit Fun has tattooed since 2001, so this is one of the island's longest-running names. The studio lists Vivian, Jimmy and Danny as resident artists and says it uses new needles and disposable tips. It also offers piercing, laser removal and a tattoo course. Its website lists daily hours of 12pm to 8pm.

Ink & Needles Tattoo Studio

Area
19 Lebuh Keng Kwee, off Penang Road
Known for
Blackwork, realism, large projects, cover-ups
Price tier
Premium
Getting there
5–10 minutes on foot from Chulia Street or Love Lane

Ink & Needles has run since 2014, with Jason, Yan and Zoey named as artists. In 2023, Daily Vanity reported senior-artist work from RM200, half sleeves at RM5,000–RM6,000 and full sleeves at RM12,000–RM13,000. Those figures are now three years old, so confirm before booking. Note that the studio closes on Thursdays.

Lostchild Tattoo & Piercing

Area
Prangin Mall, Level 2 (#02-36), George Town
Known for
Blackwork, Japanese, realism, body piercing
Price tier
Mid (estimate)
Getting there
Inside Prangin Mall, linked to Komtar, with mall parking

Lostchild works from 11am to 8pm and takes walk-ins when the artists have space. Founder Bird Lostchild has a name for realism, although we could not confirm the current roster. Because it sits inside an air-conditioned mall, it suits anyone who wants an easy, covered car park.

THRIL LAB

Area
240 Jalan C.Y. Choy (Bridge Street), George Town
Known for
Fine line, anime, oriental, micro-realism, woodcut, handpoke
Price tier
Mid (estimate)
Getting there
About 10 minutes on foot from Komtar; Grab from Chulia Street

THRIL LAB is a ten-artist collective covering more than ten styles, so it suits people who want a particular look rather than a particular shop. It works by appointment only, from 1pm to 8pm. The studio accepts cash, QR, Touch 'n Go and bank transfer, while cards carry a 3% surcharge.

Exotic Tattoo and Piercing Studio

Area
Lot A2-32, Level 2, Komtar
Known for
Custom tattoos, piercing, titanium jewellery
Price tier
Budget–Mid (estimate)
Getting there
Right above the main Komtar bus terminal

Exotic calls itself Penang's first professional tattoo and piercing studio. Sources disagree on the exact year, but it dates from the late 1990s. It posted new work in 2026 and opens from noon to 8pm. For travellers using the bus, no studio on this list is easier to reach.

S Tattoo Studio Penang

Area
1e Jalan Hutton, George Town
Known for
Custom work; also posts removal content
Price tier
Mid (estimate)
Getting there
About 10 minutes on foot from the top of Love Lane

S Tattoo sits on Jalan Hutton, between Penang Road and Burmah Road. Its Instagram posted as recently as October 2026. A map listing shows roughly 11am to 10pm on weekdays, with shorter weekend hours, so it can suit a late session. Message first to check the style fits your idea.

Skin Nation Tattoo

Area
101-1 Jalan Penang (first floor), George Town
Known for
Custom fine line, floral, figurative, portraits, lettering
Price tier
Mid–Premium
Getting there
5–10 minutes on foot from Chulia Street

Skin Nation opened in 2012 and only does custom designs, led by artist Jennifer Neoh. In 2023 it quoted work from RM250 and charged by session, not by hour, with a 4–5 hour session at RM1,800. Prices may have moved since, so ask for a fresh quote.

Miuzzy Ink (Fineline) Tattoo Studio

Area
Lebuh Sandilands, George Town heritage core
Known for
Fine line and miniature tattoos, black or colour
Price tier
Mid (estimate)
Getting there
Walkable from Chulia Street; no unit number published

Miuzzy focuses on small, delicate pieces and also offers cosmetic brow work. However, we could not find a dated 2025–2026 post, so WhatsApp the studio to confirm it is taking bookings and to get the exact unit. If you want tiny script or florals, it is worth that message.

Needle Wanderers Studio

Area
Taman Kota Permai, Bukit Mertajam (mainland)
Known for
Blackwork, realism, cosmetic tattooing, guest artists
Price tier
Budget–Mid (estimate)
Getting there
Car or Grab, about 20–30 minutes from Butterworth

Needle Wanderers opened in 2016 and is the only mainland studio we could verify. It typically opens Tuesday to Sunday and closes on Mondays. Its latest post we found dates from March 2025, so check that it is active before you drive over.

What a tattoo in Penang costs

Few Penang studios publish prices, so treat any number as a starting point. In short, no tattoo shop in Penang can give a fair quote until it sees your design and placement. The two that did, Ink & Needles and Skin Nation, quoted starting prices of RM200–RM250 in 2023. Large realism work at the top end runs well into four or five figures. In general, size, detail, placement and the artist's seniority drive the quote. Colour and cover-ups usually cost more. For national ranges and what changes them, see our tattoo price guide for Malaysia and the small tattoo price breakdown. Always confirm the final price before booking.

Practical tips for a tattoo shop visit in Penang

Book ahead, even for small pieces

WhatsApp is the normal booking channel at every tattoo shop in Penang that we list. Ink & Needles, THRIL LAB and Lostchild all prefer bookings to walk-ins. Also, weekends and public holidays bring heavy domestic tourist traffic into George Town, especially around Armenian Street. So if you only have a Saturday, message the studio a week early.

Mind the hours and closing days

Heritage-zone studios rarely open before 11am. Most then close at 8pm or 9pm. That suits a morning of street art and a late lunch, then an afternoon session. Remember that Ink & Needles closes on Thursdays and Needle Wanderers on Mondays.

Grab beats driving in the heritage zone

Street parking in the inner grid uses coupons or an app, and the lanes are narrow. Instead, take a Grab, or park at Prangin Mall or Komtar if you must drive. For Bukit Mertajam, you will cross the Penang Bridge or the Second Bridge, and only the mainland-to-island direction charges a toll.

Check hygiene yourself

Malaysia has no dedicated regulator for tattoo studios, so the checks fall on you, even at a famous tattoo shop in Penang. Watch the artist open new needles, ask which inks they use and look for barrier film on the station. Our guide on how to choose a tattoo artist covers the portfolio and consultation questions to ask. You must also be 18 or older.

Local tip

Batu Ferringhi and Tanjung Bungah are tempting, but a fresh tattoo and the sea do not mix. Book your session near the end of your trip, or plan about two weeks of no swimming and little sun. Our tattoo aftercare guide explains why humidity slows healing.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best tattoo shop in Penang?

There is no single best tattoo shop in Penang. Instead, match the shop to the style. Ink & Needles and Pitt's are long-standing choices for realism and large work. THRIL LAB and Miuzzy Ink suit fine line. Exotic and Lostchild are the easiest walk-in options near Komtar.

How much does a tattoo cost in Penang?

Published starting prices from two George Town studios were RM200–RM250 in 2023. Sleeves at a premium studio ran RM5,000–RM13,000 at that time. Size, detail, placement and artist seniority change the price, so always get a quote first.

Can I walk in to a tattoo shop in Penang?

Sometimes. Mall studios such as Lostchild and Exotic take walk-ins when an artist is free. However, THRIL LAB works by appointment only, and busy studios prefer bookings. Message on WhatsApp a few days ahead, especially for weekends.

What is the legal age for a tattoo in Penang?

Studios in Malaysia tattoo clients aged 18 and above, and they may ask for ID. For the wider rules, see our guide on whether tattoos are legal in Malaysia.

Can I go to the beach after a tattoo in Penang?

Avoid the sea, pools and strong sun for about two weeks while the skin heals. Salt water and sunburn can damage a fresh tattoo, so plan beach days before your session.

Are there tattoo shops on the Penang mainland?

Yes. Bukit Mertajam, Perai and Butterworth all have shops that mainly serve local clients. Needle Wanderers in Bukit Mertajam is the one we could verify, and you will need a car or Grab to reach it.
