Quick answer

For a tattoo shop in Ipoh close to the station and Concubine Lane, try GG Ink on Jalan Market or Caspar Tattoos on Jalan Sultan Iskandar, which stays open late. For realism, Ary Tattoo Studio in Buntong is the specialist. Most Ipoh studios work by appointment, so message on WhatsApp a few days ahead.

Most people arrive in Ipoh for the food, the limestone hills and the murals. A few now plan a tattoo shop in Ipoh into the same weekend. The city's scene is small and local, and very little of it shows up in English-language guides. However, it covers more ground than you might expect, from walk-up Old Town shops to a realism artist who tours across the region. Below are four studios we checked against at least two sources, plus timing tips for a day trip from KL or Penang.

How we chose these Ipoh studios

Each studio below appears in its own social channels and at least one independent source, such as Waze, OpenStreetMap or a local directory. We also looked for work posted in 2025 or 2026. No studio paid to appear, and the order is geographic. Price tiers are our estimates, since no Ipoh studio publishes prices. Read our editorial policy for the full method.

Old Town, New Town and the suburbs

Ipoh splits neatly along the Kinta River. On the west bank, Old Town holds the railway station, the town hall, Concubine Lane, Kong Heng and the mural trail. Two of our four studios sit here, so you can walk between lunch, coffee and your session.

Across the river, New Town and Greentown have the newer shophouses and malls. In fact, we found no verified studio there right now. Meanwhile, the rest of the scene lives in suburbs such as Buntong, Silibin and Bercham. These shops mainly serve local clients by appointment, so you will need a Grab.

4 verified tattoo shops in Ipoh

Area
41 Jalan Market (Jalan Yau Tet Sin), Old Town
Known for
General custom work, piercing, tattoo and piercing courses
Price tier
Mid (estimate)
Getting there
Short walk from Concubine Lane and Ipoh railway station

GG Ink is the most central studio on this list and a natural first stop for visitors. It runs tattoo and body-piercing courses, so expect a busy, teaching-style shop. Waze lists it as open daily from 10:30am to 7:30pm. Message ahead for weekends, when Old Town fills up.

Caspar Tattoos

Area
40 Jalan Sultan Iskandar, corner of Jalan Panglima, Old Town
Known for
Blackwork and colour: skulls, octopus, snakes
Price tier
Budget–Mid (estimate)
Getting there
On the street Concubine Lane runs off

Caspar describes his studio as a tattoo shop inside a coffee shop, which fits Ipoh perfectly. Waze lists hours of noon to 11pm daily, so this is the best bet for an evening session after a day of eating. The owner-artist also takes students. Some listings call it "Tattoo & Vape Shop", but the phone number matches.

Ary Tattoo Studio

Area
48 Persiaran Buntong Jaya 14, Buntong
Known for
Realism, hyper-realistic drawing, airbrush
Price tier
Mid–Premium (estimate)
Getting there
About 10 minutes by Grab from Old Town

Lead artist Ary focuses on realism and has done guest spots in Miri, Bandung, Jakarta and Bali in 2025 and 2026. Because he travels, check his dates before you plan a trip around him. Realism takes time, so ask how many sessions your piece needs and budget for each.

Ipoh Ink Body Art Tattoo Studio

Area
First floor, 243 Jalan Silibin, Taman Alkaff
Known for
Traditional and neo-traditional motifs, Balinese barong designs
Price tier
Budget–Mid (estimate)
Getting there
Grab from Old Town

Artist Jeevan posted steadily from March 2025 to August 2026, mostly bold skulls, snakes, sparrows and barong pieces. Some maps still show an older pin near Little India, so confirm the Silibin address on WhatsApp before you set off.

One more name to know: The Coven, an appointment-only studio with several artists, posts new work on Instagram every week. However, it does not publish a street address, and we could not find a second source, so it is not on our list yet. A few older Ipoh shops also appear in directories without any recent activity we could confirm.

Fitting a tattoo shop in Ipoh into a food trip

Arriving by ETS from KL

The ETS train from KL Sentral stops at Ipoh railway station, on the edge of Old Town. From there, GG Ink and Caspar are both walkable. For Buntong or Silibin, a Grab is quick and cheap. So a day trip works well: breakfast dim sum, a morning walk, then an afternoon session and the evening train back.

Eat first, then get tattooed

A long session on an empty stomach makes pain worse and can leave you lightheaded. So have a proper meal beforehand, and bring water and a snack. Afterwards, the bigger risk is heat and sweat while you queue outside popular shops. Keep the wrap on and stay in the shade. Our tattoo pain chart and aftercare guide help you prepare.

Weekends and parking

Day-trippers from KL and Penang crowd Old Town on weekends, especially around Concubine Lane and Kong Heng. Street parking fills early and is paid on weekdays through the council system. If you drive, use the larger lots near the station or Ipoh Padang, and check current rules. Better still, book a weekday slot.

What a tattoo costs in Ipoh

No Ipoh studio we checked publishes prices; all of them quote by WhatsApp or direct message. In our estimate, flash and small pieces cost about the same as in KL or slightly less, while realism specialists charge more. As always, size, detail, placement and the artist's experience drive the quote. Our Malaysia tattoo price guide gives national ranges. Confirm the final price before booking.

Local tip

Ask for a quote with a photo of your placement and a rough size in centimetres. Ipoh artists reply faster when they can see the area, and you avoid surprises on the day.
