Quick answer

For a tattoo in Kota Kinabalu, start with Orangutan Tattoo Studio if you want Borneo motifs or hand-tapping. Deadlights and Anarchy sit in the city centre for walk-in style questions, MILESIX suits dark blackwork, and Rembulan is a private studio by appointment. Book through Instagram or WhatsApp, and confirm the price before you pay a deposit.

Getting a tattoo in Kota Kinabalu is easier than many visitors expect. KK has a small, close-knit scene, and most studios cluster in the old city-centre grid near the waterfront. So you can often see two or three shops on foot in one afternoon. This guide lists five studios we checked in October 2026, explains which one suits which style, and covers the practical side of a tattoo in Sabah: heat, island trips and healing.

How we chose these KK tattoo studios

Every studio below appears in at least two independent sources, such as its own Instagram or website plus a 2025 Sabah directory. Each one also showed recent work, dated between September and October 2026. We left out any Kota Kinabalu tattoo studio we could not confirm, even well-known names. No studio paid to appear here. For our full method, read how we pick studios on the Malaysia tattoo shops hub.

We do not show star ratings or review counts. Instead, look at each studio's healed work on Instagram, because fresh photos can hide problems that only show after a month.

The best tattoo studios in Kota Kinabalu

Orangutan Tattoo Studio

Area
Lorong Dewan, KK city centre
Known for
Borneo traditional motifs, hand-tapping, hand-poke, machine work, cover-ups
Price tier
Mid (our estimate, no published rates)
Getting there
In the city-centre grid, walkable from the Gaya Street and waterfront area

Orangutan is the clearest choice in KK for a Borneo-inspired piece. Its website lists bunga terung, the asu guardian spirit, the kenyalang hornbill and tree-of-life designs. It also offers hand-tapping and hand-poking as well as machine work. The studio says its team has over 40 years of combined experience. It publishes hours of 11am to 9pm, but check before you walk over.

Deadlights Tattoo Studio

Area
2nd floor, Lorong Dewan, KK city centre
Known for
All styles, with several resident artists
Price tier
Mid (our estimate)
Getting there
Same street as Orangutan, so easy to visit both on foot

Deadlights describes itself as "all style tattooing", and its bio tags five artists. That range helps if you are not sure yet which style you want, because you can compare portfolios under one roof. The bio lists hours of Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 8pm. So plan around Monday closures.

Anarchy Tattoo & Body Piercing

Area
3rd floor, Centre Point Sabah mall
Known for
Tattoos plus body piercing
Price tier
Mid (our estimate)
Getting there
Inside a city-centre mall, a short walk from the waterfront

Anarchy is the KK name most people search for, and it combines tattooing with piercing. A mall location means air-conditioning, easy parking and a simple meeting point. That suits a first visit or a small piece between errands. Message ahead if you want a specific artist, since walk-in slots vary.

MILESIX Tattoo Studio

Area
Lintas Plaza, Luyang
Known for
Dark illustrative work and blackwork
Price tier
Mid (our estimate)
Getting there
A few km inland from the centre; easiest by car or Grab

MILESIX posts bold, dark illustration: skulls, heavy black fill and detailed linework. Artists Ronny Taptoe and Yokhz appear on its feed. If you like blackwork tattoos, its portfolio is the one to study first. Lintas is outside the walking zone, so budget a short ride.

Rembulan Tattoo

Area
Inanam Capital, Kolombong
Known for
Private, one-artist sessions
Price tier
Mid (our estimate)
Getting there
North-east side of the city; by car or Grab

Rembulan is a mini private studio that works by appointment only, with no walk-ins. The artist, Mitch, is part of the Tattooed Women of Borneo community and also does guest spots in Peninsular Malaysia. A private room suits nervous first-timers and placements where you want privacy. Because she travels, book well ahead.

What about Culture Shock?

Culture Shock Tattoo & Piercing at Centre Point calls itself the first tattoo studio in Sabah, open since 2004. That is the studio's own claim. However, we could not confirm any 2025–26 activity, so we left it off the list. If you visit, check its current work first.

Choosing a tattoo shop in KK by style

Kota Kinabalu tattoo studios overlap, but each has a clear lean. For example, pick Orangutan for Bornean motifs and hand-tapping, MILESIX for heavy black work, and Deadlights when you want to compare several artists. Meanwhile, Rembulan suits a calm, private session.

If you want a Sabah or Sarawak motif, learn what it means first. Our guide to Malaysian tattoo designs explains bunga terung, the hornbill and other symbols. Some traditional motifs carry status, so let the artist advise you. For the full story of hand-tapping, our Borneo hand-tap tattoo guide covers the process and etiquette. Many of the masters of that tradition work across the border in Kuching, Sarawak.

Tattoo prices in Kota Kinabalu

No tattoo studio in Kota Kinabalu on our list publishes a price list, so treat any figure as a starting point. Across Malaysia, shop minimums usually run from about RM120 to RM250. Hourly rates for most artists sit around RM150 to RM500. In addition, size, detail, colour and placement all push the price up or down. Hand-tapped work often takes longer than machine work, so ask how the artist charges for it.

Always confirm the quote and the deposit rules in writing before booking. For full RM ranges, see our tattoo price guide for Malaysia and the small tattoo price breakdown.

Sabah tips: islands, heat and healing

Timing is the biggest decision for a tattoo in Kota Kinabalu. The city sits right next to the Tunku Abdul Rahman islands, and many visitors also head for Kinabalu Park. That is the main trap. A fresh tattoo should stay out of the sea, pools and strong sun for at least two weeks. So get tattooed on your last day or two in Sabah, after the snorkelling is done.

Sweat matters too. KK is hot and humid all year, so wear loose clothes over the new piece and keep it clean. Our tattoo aftercare guide and the post on healing in Malaysian humidity explain each step. If you are visiting from abroad, read getting a tattoo in Malaysia as a tourist as well.

Local tip

Most KK studios answer fastest on Instagram DM or WhatsApp. Send your idea, size in centimetres, placement and a reference photo. Then you usually get a quote and a date in one exchange.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get a traditional Borneo tattoo in Kota Kinabalu?

Orangutan Tattoo Studio in the city centre lists Borneo motifs and offers hand-tapping and hand-poking. For the deepest hand-tap tradition, many people also travel to Kuching, where Iban masters work.

Do KK tattoo studios take walk-ins?

Some do, such as the city-centre studios, but slots depend on the day. Rembulan takes appointments only. So message first, especially on weekends and public holidays.

How much is a small tattoo in Kota Kinabalu?

KK studios do not publish rates. As a rough guide, Malaysian shop minimums run about RM120 to RM250. Confirm the exact quote with the studio before booking.

Can I go to the beach after a tattoo in Sabah?

Not straight away. Keep a fresh tattoo out of seawater, pools and direct sun for about two weeks. That is why most visitors book their session at the end of the trip.

Is there a tattoo convention in Sabah?

Sabah hosted international tattoo conventions in 2015, 2016 and 2017. We have not found a confirmed 2026 edition. See our tattoo expo guide for current events.
